Your Complete Guide to Summer Hiking in the White Mountains
From family-friendly waterfall walks to multi-day Presidential Traverse attempts — everything you need to plan your White Mountains hiking season.
Summer hiking season in the White Mountains typically runs from late May through mid-October, but the sweet spot is mid-June through September when trails are fully clear, huts are staffed, and the weather is most predictable. Whether you're planning your first 4,000-footer or your fiftieth, this guide covers everything from gear and permits to our favorite trails at every difficulty level.
For families and casual hikers, the White Mountains offer dozens of trails under four miles round trip with stunning payoffs. Artists Bluff in Franconia Notch is our top recommendation — a 1.5-mile loop with panoramic views of the notch that even young children can manage. Sabbaday Falls on the Kancamagus Highway is another crowd-pleaser: a short, flat walk to a gorgeous multi-tiered waterfall. For something a bit longer, the Basin-Cascades Trail follows the Pemigewasset River for two miles through old-growth forest to a series of swimming holes that are perfect on hot August afternoons.
Experienced hikers come to the Whites for the alpine zone — and for good reason. The Franconia Ridge traverse (Falling Waters to Old Bridle Path) is consistently rated one of the top day hikes in the Northeast. The 8.9-mile loop gains 3,900 feet of elevation and spends nearly two miles above treeline on an exposed ridge connecting Little Haystack, Lincoln, and Lafayette. Start early, bring layers for any weather, and budget 7 to 9 hours. For the truly ambitious, the Presidential Traverse covers 23 miles and seven summits in a single push — most fit hikers complete it in 12 to 16 hours, staging cars at Appalachia and Crawford Notch trailheads.
